April Showers Bring May Show Flowers

4/29/2014

I spent this weekend at Campbell Station Park for Art in the Park, creating plein aire art pieces and photographs. They will be shown at the opening reception on Friday, May 9, 7 PM at 11483 Parkside Drive (inside Turkey Creek next to Men's Warehouse). I'll be exhibiting four brand new watercolors and photographs for sale, as well as oldies-but-goodies Carefully Composed & Microcosm.
My next show will be Alchemy: The Magic of Art and Flowers, on Friday, May 16 from 1 -4 and Saturday, May 17 from 10-4 at the Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive. Key to the Soul will be featured as a pairing with a floral arrangement reflecting the piece, and The Art of Gardening and Ave Maria will also be displayed.
These shows are free and open to the public, so please come by and support your local artists (including me)!

Next Friday, April 4, is my First Friday show at New South Collective on Gay Street. This will also coincide with the Dogwood Arts Festival's Art on the Block, so there are a TON of reasons to be downtown that Friday. You can join the event on my Facebook page by clicking the picture above, and if you do stop by from 6-9, there will be food, drink and tons of awesome art to buy, from prints and paintings to totes and trading cards. You'll also be entered to win an Elizabeth Kidder: Illustrator Swag Bag, which will include postcards, buttons, prints and a signed copy of Jannah Station: A Soft Murder. The winner will be chosen at random at the show, so you must be present to win. You can check out a list of the pieces and formats that will be available at the show on my First Friday page. Hope to see you all there!

With all the show and novel prep, I've (ironically) had to draw back on my artwork. But I couldn't resist sketching out this little guy - a pangolin, the cutest armored mammal since the armadillo. The watercolor and ink is a welcome return after all my digital work, so I'll try to do more as the weeks go on, no matter how busy I am.

Old Sins, the publishing company that puts out "Jannah Station," and Elizabeth Kidder: Illustrator will be at Marble City Comicon April 11-13, with our own cool booth for you to come by and check out. We'll have lots of cool artwork from both "Jannah Station" and my latest upcoming graphic novel, "Despina" as well as personal work, including the ever-popular "Reading is Sexy" tote bags, which will come in handy for carrying all your con swag. Be sure to buy your tickets now and come check us out!

Thanks for reading, be sure to check out my work on Society6 and look for updates on my Facebook page.

*Warning: Awesome Huge Post Ahead*
Lots of things to talk about means lots of bullet points:

Snippets from "Journey to Vapourri."
  • My trading card set "Journey to Vapourri" will be premiering November 26 on NeonMob. "Journey to Vapourri" features entries from a journal created in 1856, detailing the existence of dinosaurs and humans coexisting on a small island off the coat of Australia called Vapourri. You can click on the picture above to join the Facebook event for the release, and here to join NeonMob for free and start collecting five packs a day of over twenty different card sets by amazing artists.

"Nereidum" Acrylic on canvas
  • For those who don't know about First Fridays, galleries all over the country traditionally have openings for new shows on the first Friday of each month. I've recently been given a First Friday show this December 6 at Bliss downtown in Market Square. It will feature both old favorites, such as "Key to the Soul" and new additions, like "Nereidum" above, for sale, as well as tote bags, buttons, framed and unframed prints and canvases. The closer we get to December, the more information, and the more art, I'll have to share.

"Dia de los Muertos Princesas"
  • Thank you to all who attended the Day of the Dead show at ZaPow! gallery in Asheville, NC. I'm pleased to announce "Dia de los Muertos Princesas" which hung in the window of ZaPow! this past month, has sold - I hope the new owner likes it in their home. For those who wanted it in their home, don't despair - the prints are still available for sale on my Society6 page.

  • New personal fun project - animal mix & match! Throw two animals together, and see what happens, especially when the ideas come from my Facebook followers. After the first batch, I'm looking for suggestions for new animal combos - just click on the picture above and submit your ideas. The best ones will be printed and shown at my First Friday show this December.

Goodness that was a awesome long post! Thanks for sticking through to the end, I hope you liked it, and look forward to more event updates later this month.

Post-DragonCon

DragonCon 2013 was a success! I got to finally see Artist Alley, where I met Yale Stewart, of JL8 fame, and attended a comedy seminar where I met Bill Corbet, of MST3K fame. I even got to be a part of a panel, "Raising the Robot" where I did a live-drawing session of robot sex and robot religion. :)

Life after the con has been a tumultuous up-and-down elevator (I don't like roller coasters). I've been offered a First Friday showing at the store Bliss downtown in December. I also sliced off a chunk of my middle finger and had to be taken to the emergency room for my first stitches ever. Don't worry, it was my left hand so, while awkward, it hasn't stopped me from my work, which includes a new series I'm developing to hang in my gallery in Asheville. I'll give you a hint - the theme of the show is Day of the Dead. More images to come next week, hope everyone had a sans-hospital Labor Day!

A Gallery after my own Heart

It's exciting, nerve-wracking, and wonderful to have your work on display. It feels the same way to create that gallery too! This Friday, May 24 at Einstein Bros. Bagels on Parkside, I've curated an art exhibit of local students and their amazing work. The work will be up for a week after, but Friday is opening night, and will include an inaugural spoken word event from 6-8, that will hopefully continue throughout the summer. I've done our pervious Kids Nights, but this will be my first event on my own, and I know that it would mean so much to me, and infinitely more to the talented artists in the show, that you stop by to see their amazing work.

My Heartbeat

Today I visited the Pei Ling Chan gallery to view an exhibition called "Pulse Spiral" by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. It is composed of 300 lightbulbs suspended from the ceiling. You hold some grips on a stand, and it measures your pulse and sends it into the bottom-most lightbulb, which flickers in time with your pulse, then spirals it up into the other lightbulbs.
It was really lovely to sit with the installation in the darkened room, with all the lights flickering, and it sounded like an evening of chirping crickets. Sadly, today was the last day of the exhibition, but I'm glad I got to see it before it was gone.
