The Art of Stories
In a world of increasing digital and technological advances, it is still impossible to generate the perfect story. The necessary human component is the hidden majesty of the story - without the author, there would be no story, but the story is not about the author. The story is its own being, with its own life.
So begins the launch of "The Art of Stories" Contest. A short story by a living author will be selected and placed here so all can read it, and the rest is up to you. Whatever your interpretation of the story is, create a piece of art about it. It can be a cover, a full page interior or a spot, whatever size and medium you choose, but it must reflect the story.
At the end of the submitting period, your work will be judged, and the three best pieces will be featured on www.elizabethkidder.com until the next contest is announced. The winners will be rewarded with fun swag and prizes, as well as a print of your winning piece. So get reading, and start submitting! Submit jpgs at 150 dpi, no bigger than 600 to 600 pixels, to eak@elizabethkidder.com, and good luck!

The Story: "Death and the Maiden" The Author: Ray Bradbury
Submissions Accepted from June 1 to June 30
The complete story can be read here, or in Ray Bradbury's story collection, "The Machineries of Joy."
Ray Bradbury is one of the most celebrated fiction writers of our time. You may only know him from "Fahrenheit 451", but besides thirty other books, he is also a proficient short story writer, as well as a writer for theater and screen. He's won the National Medal of Arts, one of the Best Books of the Year by the Lost Angeles Times, and honored by the National Book Foundation. But the reason I've selected him is that he is one of the few authors I've read that, in such short space, sends so many shivers up my spine. His work is thoroughly gripping and enchantingly unnerving, and the words tend to linger in your mind long after you've set the story aside. "Death and the Maiden" is no exception, and provides more than enough entrancing images, within the bargain of "twenty-four long sweet summer hours."
